The Patented* squared, rolled-toe design of the EDSS Shoe helps provide the horse with support and ease of breakover for the duration of the healing process. It is made of a strong heat-treated aluminum alloy for light weight durability. The shoe has holes drilled and tapped for easy attachment of EDSS parts. The hole at the toe is used for attaching the EDSS pad to the shoe and is tapped for the specific stainless steel bolt included in the system. The holes along the inside of the rim are used for precise attachment of the wedge rails. The interchangeable parts design of the EDSS makes it easy for the farrier and less painful for the horse because adjustments can be made without removing the shoe. Available sizes: (Small/00), 0, (Medium/1), 2, (Large/3) & 4. *These horseshoes have been patented by Gene Ovnicek in U.S. Patent No. 5,727,633 and by David M. Duckett in U.S. Patent Nos. 5,165,481 and 5,368,104.

This durable plastic EDSS Pad used is in conjunction with the EDSS Shoe. It has a stainless steel insert embedded in the toe region for a firm (seated out) attachment to the shoe. The molded frog insert transfers support through the Impression Material to the frog, bars and sole of the foot. This will enhance blood circulation and heel expansion. The molded insert also allows for additional inserts to be added if needed. Pad sizes (small:00-0, medium:1-2 & large:3-4) correspond to EDSS shoe sizes.

The Impression Material is an extension of the Styrofoam treatment. This 2-part material, when blended together, will cure to a rubber-like consistency. The blended Impression Material is placed in the bottom of the foot with an Impression Pad taped over it. A mold is made when the horse stands on the impression pad. After the material has cured, it can be trimmed away from sensitive areas and placed back in the foot under the EDSS Pad & Shoe. The material then is used to transfer support from the EDSS Pad to the frog, bars and sole. (THIS MATERIAL IS MOLDED THE SAME WAY WHEN USED UNDER CONVENTIONAL PADS.) The 2-part material is sold in quantities of 2, 4 & 6 pounds (12 small containers=1.25 lbs. available in complete EDSS system) [Available in Soft (blue) or Regular (pink)]

2 Lb. Unit = $44 ($22/lb.)

4 Lb. Unit = $84 ($21/lb.)

6 Lb. Unit = $120 ($20/lb.)

The Frog Inserts are hard plastic, frog shaped wedge pieces. There are a total of 12 pieces (6 elevations) plus screws to attach them to the EDSS pad included in the system. Adjustments with Frog Inserts can be made without removing the shoe. These inserts are used to transfer weight bearing support to the caudal portion of the foot. Frog Insert in conjunction with the Impression Material allow for loading of the frog and increasing blood circulation for optimal healing. Sizes (small, medium & large sets) correspond to EDSS Pad Sizes.

The Wedge Rails are a hard plastic, wedge shaped molded piece that attaches to the shoe. The stabilizing peg and attachment hole are used to fasten the Rails to the pre-drilled EDSS Shoes. There are a total of 12 Rails (3 elevations) plus attachment bolts, included in the system, and again, adjustments can be made without removing the shoe. The rails are used to adjust the tension on the deep digital flexor tendon. The placement of the rails will also allow the horse easier lateral breakover which will make turning much more pain free. All Wedge Rails will fit any size EDSS Shoe.

The Styrofoam Pads are the most important tool we have found to treat horses in the acute stage of laminitis. They are pre-cut, hoof shaped pads or blocks of a very dense 2" piece of special Styrofoam. (*It is important to note that regular white beaded Styrofoam is a poor substitute for this use. This consistency and thickness is very important for optimal treatment.) The Styrofoam is used to offer the horse comfort and support through this critical stage of laminitis. Use of the Styrofoam will allow the horse to stabilized so that a more comprehensive diagnosis and treatment approach can be established. There are 4 pads to a set. Sizes range from Small to X-Large (‘00’ to ‘4’).

The Impression Pads are a very hard, flat, plastic pad used to mold the Impression Material in the sole of the foot while it sets up. The pads have a tapered edge so that one side or the other will more properly fit the foot being worked on. Although this particular item is very necessary, it is one that can be used over and over again. Sizes range from Small to Large (‘00’ to ‘3’).

The EDSS Instruction Video is CRITICAL before applying the EDSS treatment materials. This tape is a very in-depth and comprehensive guide for hoof preparation, system application, parts adjustment and troubleshooting tips for the use of the Equine Digit Support System. It is intended for use by professional farriers and veterinarians. By having this essential instruction material, you will yield the most optimal results in the treatment process, and in many cases will help return the horse to a pre-disease condition. An Instruction Booklet accompanies the video for reference use in the field. (The EDSS Instruction Video can be purchased seperately or is included in the EDSS A2Z Kit.)
Approximate running time: 1 hr. 40 min.

The EDSS A2Z Kit is everything you might need to take a horse through treatment process of the Laminitis or Founder insult. This kit will start you off with the detailed instruction in the video that is critical in the successful treatment using the EDSS. The initial treatment of the acute phase of laminitis is addressed with the use of the Styrofoam Support Blocks. Once the horse has stabilized and improved to around a grade II lame, you move to the more comprehensive shoes, pads, impression material and adjustable parts. All the materials in the kit are sufficient for the initial application and usually 2 resets. The kit is available in sizes: (Small/00), 0, (Medium/1), 2, (Large/3), & 4.

The Steward Clogs

Image Coming Soon!

Originally designed by Dr. Steward of Oklahoma, the Clog has become a useful tool for primarily treating chronic laminitis, however is proving very useful in cases of Ring Bone. Over the last few years we have worked with Dr. Steward to make the Clog a more user friendly and adjustable treatment tool.

The Clog design evolved from a simple, uninterrupted wear pattern of horses that were afflicted with laminitis and founder.  The foot surface is seated out beneath the peripheral distal border of P3 to help insure clearance for those patients that have rotated and are close to coming in contact with the ground.  Horses that have penetrated are treated using wall extensions and a large cushion support area to insure protection for P3 and the prolapsed area of the sole.  The Clog comes in 4 Standard sizes (plus optional custom sizes if needed) to accommodate most size feet from ponies to draft horses.  No adjustments in width or length are necessary as the Clog is designed to be installed with some Clog surface extending beyond the hoof on each side for attachment purposes.  The ground surface is smaller and tapers more aggressively on the anterior and posterior ends.  There is less taper on the medial and lateral sides.  The ground surface is smaller than the actual hoof size to help reduce the forces on the lamina and joints when in motion.  There is a line drawn across the foot attaching surface to serve as a guide for proper placement around the coffin bone. Placement of the Clog is important for optimal equilibrium tension. We have several different attachment options, which include screws & glue, or nails. Once attached, adjustments for breakover (anterior as well as medial & lateral) and ability to land slightly heel first is done with either EDSS Wedge Rails or by attaching rubber wear pieces or pads to the ground surface of the Clog to fine tune the comfort of the horse. Adjustments can be made several times throughout the shoeing period.  (Standard Available Sizes in widths: 4.5”, 5.0”, 5.5”, & 6.0”) (Optional Sizes to be Custom Made: 3.5", 4.0”, 6.5”, 7.0”, 8.0” & 9.0”)

The Natural Balance Pad aids in the biomechanicas of the foot by; supporting the frog buttress, stimulating proprioceptors, dissipating energy, promoting a heel-first landing, aligning the distal phalanges, improving circulation and promoting heel expansion. The durable, opaque Urethane material has been formulated to provide the optimal equalibrium between flex and rigidity. There is a "crystal clear" window just ahead of the frog piece so that the shoe/pad unit can be more accurately place on the foot relative to the solar structures. There are specially located cutouts or voids in the frog piece that replicate the central sulcus and (less dense) midsection of the frog. These features allow the pad to flex and transfer support in a way that mimics the natural biomechanical function of the frog. The heel portion of the frog piece is relieved so that the heels of the shoe can be brought in for cases of contracted heels. The wall of the frog piece in the heel region is upright so that dirt can pack between the frog piece and the shoe to offer full caudal support. At the same time, as the frog piece goes forward, there is a gradual taper to allow the dirt to clean in the anterior part of the foot. The Natural Balance Pad can be used with or without Impression Material, depending on the quality of the frog and required application. The NBP is available in two sizes (Regular = 00-1 & Large = 2 - 6) and in both a FLAT and WEDGED version of each size. (Patent Pending)

NB Perforated Pads Are Used Both as a Performance Product and Lameness Treatment Product
Image Coming Soon!

The NB Perforated Pads are proving to be a useful and versatile product.  The original idea was to develop a pad that can act like a rim pad (wedged or flat) but not completely leave the frog unsupported.  The Perf Pad also offers a good alternative to a screen pad when the use of impression material or injectable urethane is required.  However, in the 6 months since these pads have been available, the range of uses has far exceeded our expectations.  For example, for horses with a negative coffin bone angle and a severe prolapsed frog, you can turn the wedge pad over so that the flat screen section is towards the ground, and it will act as a sling for the oversized frog while the wedge helps to improve the alignment of the DIP joint.  The flat version of the Perf Pad is helpful in offering a little support and the protection of a pad that is sometimes necessary, yet still allows air to pass through.  All-in-all, we are very excited about the NB Perforated Pad and we will continue to update you on more uses as time goes on.  The Natural Balance Pad can be used with or without Impression Material, depending on the quality of the frog and required application. The NBP is available in two sizes (Regular = 00-1 & Large = 2 - 6) and in both a FLAT and WEDGED version of each size.

The EDSS Cuff Shoe is an adjunct to the EDSS nail-on shoe. It is successfully applied in cases where nailing is difficult or impossible because of sensitive hoof conditions, or when sound hoof wall is not available for nailing. The EDSS Cuff Shoe application is perfect for those feet that have extreme sole prolapsing associated with severe rotation. The shoe can be used with or without the EDSS Pad, and may be screwed directly to the hoof wall in the quarters. However, the best application is with an adhesive hoof repair material combined with screws for better precision, control and ease of removal and reattachment if adjustments and monitoring is necessary. The shoe is available in sizes: (Small/00), 0, (Medium/1), 2, (Large/3), & 4.

The EDSS Multi-Purpose Plate is an extremely durable, hard flat plate (3/16” thick) that has unlimited uses. Its rigid structure is perfect for issues of the foot that require static support from descending P3 and ultimate protection from the returning ground forces. Its primary uses are for P3 bone fractures (Fracture Plate), with the pad installed between the foot and shoe. The MP Plate makes an excellent hospital plate when applied to the ground surface of the EDSS Shoe using the Wedge Rail holes already provided in the shoe. Other successful applications of the MP Plate (in conjunction with NB Shoes and NB shoeing principles) include: a negative plane coffin bone, prolapsed frog, caudal heel pain, quarter cracks and Navicular Syndrome. Available sizes include: Small (00, 0), Medium (1, 2), Large (3), X-Large (4, 5), & Draft Size.

The EDSS First Alert Kit is a safe, effective and inexpensive tool for horse owners, farriers and vets to have on hand for cases of acute laminitis and other acute lameness problems. The kit includes:
  • Styrofoam Instruction Video & Booklet
  • 4 Styrofoam Support Blocks
  • Roll of Duct Tape
The Styrofoam Support Block System is standard treatment for acute laminitis in several universities, equine hospitals and farrier practices across the country and abroad. Now with the comprehensive instructions in the video and pre-cut blocks, horse owners and trainers can, if necessary, administer the initial treatment when laminitis is suspected. Early application of the blocks, along with the expertise of the farrier and vet will yield the best results and increase the chances of saving the horse's life!
Available in 4 sizes (Small, Medium, Large & X-Large)

The Purple Podiatry Pads have been designed by farrier & educator Mark Plumlee of Mission Farrier School for the treatment of acute laminitis.  For extremely severe cases (Grade IV or V), the PP Pads would be used after a few days of Styrofoam and before shoeing.  For other acute cases, we recommend using the PP Pads in conjunction with Impression Material. The benefit of the PP Pads is that they are easy to apply and once on, the horse can go several weeks without the pads having to be maintained.  Once you get the impression material applied and trimmed behind the sensitive border of P3, you can just cut one pad to fit in the caudal part of the foot over the impression material and then place a full pad over the entire foot.  To ensure a longer lasting attachment, just run a few wraps of Elastikon™ tape over the pads and around the foot.  This treatment will allow the horse to stabilize and hopefully minimize the long term affects of the disease.  (Sold by the Pair or Packs of 5 Pr.)

P3 & Navicular Bone Fracture Plate
The EDSS P3 Fracture System addresses nearly all of the needs for blood flow, torque release and breakover that are necessary for optimal heeling. The foot is prepared so that the heel is left with whatever height is stable to discourage frog contact and increase the angle to help reduce tension on the DDFT. Through specific hoof preparation, the hoof capsule is allowed to contract some to help form a natural cast around the bone. The EDSS Shoe and solid fracture plate is applied to the foot so that breakover occurs slightly forward, or directly under the tip of P3 This will ensure ease-of-breakover and relieve the most dynamic forces on P3 The tallest wedge rails are generally used in cases of articular fractures to maximize the release of the tension on the DDFT statically. The rail’s position inside of the nail groove will allow the horse to turn comfortably in small places, as well as being safe in smaller turnout areas. Adjustments can be made as often as necessary to regulate for the comfort of the animal. Available in an 1/8” Aluminum Plate (Small, Medium & Large) correspond to EDSS Shoe sizes. - EDSS Multi-Purpose Plate is now substituted for the aluminum plate.

P3 & Navicular Bone Fractures and Tendon Laceration Instruction Video
The P3 Fracture and Tendon Laceration Video includes detailed instruction for the treatment of P3 bone fractures, joint fractures and Navicular Bone fractures using the EDSS Fracture Plate System. The video covers hoof preparation (which differs from normal EDSS applications), shoe and plate placement, and adjustment specifications. Bonus Treatment Instructions As seen with the P3 fracture treatment, the EDSS Shoe and Rail system serve as the base for relieving the forces on the coffin bone, navicular bone, tendons and ligaments of the lower limb. For that reason, the shoes and rails have proven to be extremely versatile which makes them a useful tool for a wide range of applications. Quite often farriers are asked to fabricate a device that will elevate the foot above what a normal wedge pad or shoe will provide. Such is the case when treating flexor tendon lacerations or bowed tendons. The Patton shoe has been a good application for these and similar pathologies. Many times, raising or lowering adjustments need to be made to improve the treatment protocol. In most cases a new shoe has to be fabricated or the existing application has to be remodeled, all of which require removal of the shoe, plus time and labor used to make the required alterations. To remedy this problem, EDSS has instructions for tendon related pathologies (lacerations, bows, strains, etc.) that make it simple and easy to treat these injury related pathologies by using the EDSS shoes, rails and some standard 1/2” to 5/8” wedge pads. This shoe and pad combination is light and provides relief from the strain of anterior and medial/lateral breakover, and adjustments can be made without removing the shoe.

The EDSS P3 Fracture Kit contains all the materials and instructional information necessary to successfully treat P3 bone fractures & Navicular bone fractures. Available sizes: (Small/00), 0, (Medium/1), 2, (Large/3), & 4. A list of contents is as follows:
- 1 Pair of EDSS Shoes
- 1 Pair of EDSS Multi-Purpose Plates
